"Don't Miss Opportunity To Make Hospital Grounds Smoke Free" Says BMA, UK

09/12/06

BMA Cymru Wales has today renewed its call for hospital grounds to be made smoke-free.

BMA Cymru Wales has today renewed its call for hospital grounds to be made smoke-free. The BMA's call comes in response to the Welsh Assembly Government's consultation on smoke-free regulations. The regulations prohibit smoking in certain premises, places and vehicles but does not include hospital grounds. BMA Cymru Wales wants the regulations amended to include hospital grounds. Welsh Secretary of the BMA Dr Richard Lewis said: "BMA Cymru Wales has campaigned long and hard for the banning of smoking in enclosed public places - and this should include all hospital grounds. "Hospitals are places where people go to be cured of illnesses - not to increase their chances of getting another one by having to fight their way through clouds of cigarette smoke. "The Welsh Assembly Government has already made great strides by backing smoke-free legislation but must not lose this opportunity to make hospital grounds smoke free." ### A copy of the regulations are available at:
