RJRT Reports New Doral Product Responds to Customers' Request for A Cigarette That Burns Slower, Lasts Longer

02/15/00

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., Feb. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company today issued the following: Doral, America's second largest cigarette brand, is packing more tobacco into each cigarette for a cigarette that burns slower and lasts longer.

Doug Shouse, vice president of marketing for Doral, says, ``Smokers have consistently told us that the primary product quality issue among value cigarette brands is that they burn too fast and don't last as long as premium- priced brands. This change is a meaningful product upgrade and a tangible way to deliver on Doral's promise of 'Imagine Getting More.' ``In addition to the product changes, the Doral packaging and advertising have been changed to reflect the product enhancement,'' Shouse says. ``We wanted consumers to know they are now getting even more for their money with Doral. ``More than 45 million American adults smoke, and Doral listens to their voices. Doral is a brand that succeeds by responding to smoker feedback and offering value to its customers,'' Shouse says. ``By giving Doral smokers a slower-burning cigarette, it's equivalent to getting an extra pack per carton.'' This change has been made across the 18 styles of the Doral family. The blend of tobacco in all styles of Doral remains the same, ensuring that the premium taste remains the same. In a recently completed national survey of 1,200 adult smokers conducted by Dennis and Company Research, 49 percent of smokers, representing 22 million Americans, said they would prefer a cigarette that burns slower to last longer. ``Packed Tight - Burns Slow'' is written on the pack, along with ``Long Lasting Premium Taste.'' Doral continues its premium-taste guarantee and lists an 800 number for customers to call if not completely satisfied. Doral's new advertising highlights the message, ``Now Packed Tighter to Burn Slower.'' The ad campaign features testimonials from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company manufacturing employees who make Doral, as well as from Doral customers around the country. Doral, America's No. 1 savings brand, is a product of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company of Winston-Salem, N.C. The brand celebrated its 30th anniversary in September 1999 by hosting one of the country's largest customer appreciation gatherings at its manufacturing center in Tobaccoville, N.C. These activities are part of a distinctive relationship-marketing program ranked among the top 10 in America in a study conducted for the Direct Marketing Association by John Cummings & Partners. R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company is a wholly owned subsidiary of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Holdings, Inc. R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company is the second-largest tobacco company in the United States, manufacturing about one of every four cigarettes sold in the United States. Reynolds Tobacco's product line includes four of the nation's ten best-selling cigarette brands: Winston, Camel, Salem and Doral.
