Affluent Chicago suburb votes 4-2 for clean indoor air
Elk Grove, 4/3/06-- On Tuesday, the Elk Grove Village board voted 4-2 in favor of smoking restrictions in public places and increased fees for businesses that sell tobacco products.
The law will require most workplaces in the affluent Chicago suburb, including bars and restaurants, to be smokefree as of January 1. The portion of the law covering private day-care centers will go into effect on June 1.
The board also voted to eliminate smoking within 10 feet from a business’ front door. Smoking at outdoor dining areas and in parks will be allowed as long as it isn’t near established seating areas or playgrounds.
In addition, it will be unlawful to smoke in all outdoor arenas and school grounds.
