WALTHAM -- Kimberly Santos, 10, of New Bedford, and Chelsea Chudolij of East Freetown, were two of 12 young artists selected by the Massachusetts Medical Society as winners of the "Tobacco Free--Healthy Me" anti-tobacco poster contest.

The winners were chosen from among more than 450 entries submitted by children ages 5-12 through their pediatricians and teachers. Now in its fifth year, the poster contest is part of the society's on-going program to educate children about the dangers of tobacco use. The winning entries will be reproduced in a year 2001 calendar that will be distributed to family physicians, pediatricians and schools throughout Massachusetts. Many of the other entries submitted will be displayed at various locations around the state. The winners were honored at the Society's Interim Meeting of the House of Delegates held on Nov. 3 and 4 in Cambridge. "These children are to be congratulated for their efforts in encouraging other children to avoid the use of tobacco," said Virginia T. Latham, M.D., MMS president. "The Society is proud to recognize their outstanding work." The Massachusetts Medical Society was founded in 1781 to "advance medical knowledge, and to develop and maintain the highest professional and ethical standards of medical practice and health care." The MMS is the oldest continuously operating medical society in the country with more than 17,000 physicians and student members.
